MY ENTREPRENEUR JOURNEY

Jeff Mendelson - The EntrepreneurI moved from a 40-hour-a-week-cog-in-corporate-machine existence to flourishing as my own boss, running my own business.

In making this transition, I explored the #IWannaBeAnEntrepreneur decision making process, how to balance a full time job and founding a business, the ethics surrounding doing both simultaneously, and all the logistics that go along it.

I have a long and storied history of delivering greatness for companies across many niches.

When I was ready to monetize my skill set (January 2019 will mark my 10-year anniversary), I recognized that being a jack of all trades but master of none earns less than a respected authority on one specific niche. I needed to niche-ify (ok, “specialize” but I like to make up words.) In order to become a Wordpress or Marketing maven (or a maven of any flavor, let’s be honest) one must self-educate.

Soon, I was improving my skills with Google Adwords, and presented myself as a Joomla and Wordpress guru. As potential clients began to call, I started noticing other trends as well. My clients not only needed a new website, but also help in navigating the plethora of marketing options available.

I capitalized on my ability to listen beyond what the client was asking for. Nobody was calling me and asking for a website, even though they thought they were calling me and asking for a website. They were asking for a product, but what they were really seeking was a solution. Clients want any number of solutions from more exposure to ecommerce to streamlined file sharing. They wanted solutions and I switched my mindset from “Yes, sir” to “Have you thought about….?”

Today, I’m proud to say that I do have my rock-star team. I work location-independent (any local WeWork will suffice), but always have one foot back home in order to raise my girls. I work with some names you’d probably recognize and help them to build marketing plans, implement content systems, and launch coordinated campaigns from the hyper-local to worldwide.

But I couldn’t have done any of this without recruiting the best team along the way. Building marketing plans and executing them my online businesses gives me the confidence network often, speak at some pretty cool conferences, and achieve a level of lifestyle design most professionals can only dream of.
